Struggling with Miscarriage? Damaged Sperm Could Be the Reason.

Beli Vitality is men’s prenatal nutrition that helps achieve optimum sperm health so you can create the family of your dreams.

Miscarriage is difficult in every waymentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. It’s also a surprisingly common experience: an estimated one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, most often within the first twelve weeks.

Don’t lose hope. Even in the absence of clear medical explanation for miscarriage, there is strong evidence that the right fertility nutrition for both women and men can help to reduce your risk of miscarriage happening again.

Of course, miscarriage is no one’s fault, but couples who are ready to be parents want to do everything in their power to work toward a healthy pregnancy. Nutrition is the first place to look.

So much of miscarriage is out of your hands, but nutrition is something you can control. And focusing on dad’s fuel for fertility can help you bring the baby of your dreams into this world. We dug deep into fertility nutrition research and consulted the experts to create our Beli Vitality Men’s Multivitamin. It’s designed to help men boost sperm health so they can become dads. For men whose partners have struggled with miscarriage, Beli Vitality can be a game-changer.

Too often, couples are caught off guard by miscarriage, and many lack the clear answers that can help them move forward. This was the case for Allison, a mother and blogger who has written movingly of her experience with miscarriage. She was elated after hearing a heartbeat on her initial ultrasound. “I was sent on my way, left to dream up a life for this little baby inside me,” she writes. But, at a OBGYN appointment a month later, there was no longer a heartbeat. “I was honestly stunned,” she writes. “I thought that the chance of having a miscarriage after hearing a heartbeat at 8 weeks was practically zilch (it’s 3% actually).”

Allison and her husband moved forward from this loss, resolved to continue on their path to pregnancy and parenthood. Through her grief, she kept faith. “I just thought we weren’t meant to have that baby but that we would get pregnant a few months later and everything would be fine. There was no way I could be in the small minority that had two miscarriages in a row – that just wasn’t me.”

The loss of any wanted pregnancy can be devastating, and even more so if it happens again. Though the majority of couples who experience miscarriage go on to carry a healthy pregnancy to term, recurrent miscarriage (defined as two or more consecutive miscarriages) is experienced by around 1 in 100 couples.

Recurrent miscarriage became a reality for Allison and her husband when they experienced a second pregnancy loss. After she became pregnant again, she felt “ecstatic, and really thought that this time everything would be okay.” But Allison was monitored closely because of her previous miscarriage, and her doctors quickly found a problem that led to the devastating loss of this pregnancy, too.  “I really felt like all would be right in the world ‘once I got pregnant again’. I have learned SO MUCH this year about myself, the struggles that so many people go through to have children and so much empathy for them. My heart goes out to anyone who has ever experienced infertility and miscarriage.”

Damaged Sperm Are Linked with Miscarriage

Most couples who miscarry never find out exactly why. Because the majority of women go on to have a successful pregancy following miscarriage, doctors don’t often recommend extensive testing to look into the cause of miscarriage. And many insurance carriers won’t cover testing without an official diagnosis of recurrent miscarriage. Allison and her husband, too, weren’t able to find out precisely what happened. The mystery is a source of frustration for many families who seek answers after being devastated by miscarriage.

The vital importance of a mother’s preconception and prenatal health is common knowledge. Dads have historically been left out of the conversation about preconception health, but research has begun to shed light on the importance of fertility health for fathers, too.

Simply put, a father’s fertility health can affect his partner’s risk of miscarriage. Sperm is directly responsible for delivering the DNA blueprint that creates a placenta which nourishes the growing baby throughout pregnancy, and oxidative damage to sperm DNA can negatively affect the viability of the pregnancy.

A 2019 study by Imperial College scientists found significantly more DNA damage in the sperm of men whose partners had suffered recurrent miscarriage than in men whose partners had carried a pregnancy to term. Lead author Dr. Channa Jayasena sees in this work evidence of the vital importance of fathers’ fertility health. “Now we realise both partners contribute to recurrent miscarriage,” Dr. Jayasena explains, “we can hopefully get a clearer picture of the problem and start to look for ways of ensuring more pregnancies result in a healthy baby.”

Nutrition for Sperm Health Can Help You Achieve a Healthy Pregnancy

New sperm are made continually and take around three months to mature. That makes the months leading up to conception a crucial time for sperm health. Your preconception window is the best time to prioritize nutrition in order to protect the healthy development of sperm, and Beli Vitality helps ensure your sperm get the support they need to grow up strong.

Antioxidants are high on the list of research-supported dietary interventions that can support male fertility. It’s common to find oxidative damage in high levels in the sperm of men whose partners have miscarried. Following a sperm analysis, the presence of DNA fragmentation is a signal that the concentration of free radicals in semen is too high. There is a growing scientific consensus that the presence of too many free radicals in the body wreaks havoc for male fertility and damages sperm quality.

Luckily, sperm doesn’t have to stay damaged forever. Antioxidant therapy has been shown to reduce oxidative stress and measurably improve sperm health, including raising sperm count, improving sperm mobility, and protecting the DNA integrity of sperm.

The powerful combination of antioxidants in Beli Vitality Men’s Multivitamin, including zinc, L-Carnitine, L-Arginine, Coenzyme Q10, L-Taurine, and N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, has been shown to improve all dimensions of sperm health, including sperm count, motility, morphology, and DNA integrity. Beli Vitality is the only men’s preconception multivitamin to contain all of these in our Vitality Antioxidant Blend, plus Shilajit, an adaptogenic mineral shown to improve sperm health in clinical trials. Beli Vitality is backed by nutrotionists because it can help improve sperm health and reduce the risk of recurrent miscarriage.

Following their second miscarriage, Allison’s husband began supplementing with Beli’s antioxidant blend. And there’s a happy ending: they’re now blissfully raising their rainbow baby. “After going through miscarriage,” Allison reflects, “I want families to know that while it may be common, it’s incredibly painful and all of your feelings are valid. Just know it does get better. Try to focus on healing, both emotionally and physically.” If you, too, have struggled with miscarriage, Beli can provide nutritional support that can boost your fertility health. Let Beli help you create the family of your dreams.
